A beautifully open and light community hub, Salt of the Earth Broadstairs offers not only plastic free shopping, but also an abundant café with mindfully curated sweet and savoury pastries and cakes. As well as providing plastic-free alternatives to their customers, the shop itself is a Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Business, meaning they are leading by example in having removed at least three items of single use plastic from their own offer.

Astounded by the volume of plastic shelled from supermarket shopping, Monica drove her passion for the sea into creating a sustainable and environmentally conscious business here in Thanet, offering quality refillable and plastic free products to the local community. 

It is apparent from the pockets of locals gathered around tables, making friends out of strangers, and the number of customers who stop to chat to her, that Monica has crafted a genuine community space at Salt of the Earth. 

Beyond the café and shop space, Monica works to source products from plastic-conscious suppliers to support her goals for Salt of the Earth. 

Alongside her business, Monica works as a Surfers Against Sewage community lead and supports a number of community groups and initiatives working to reduce waste in the district. “One thing I found important to convey with the shop is that it’s not about doing everything perfectly, it’s really about making small changes. It really does start with just replacing one item you use every day with a plastic free alternative. When you realise it’s that simple, it starts to have a knock-on effect.”
