The Margate Cup launches on Friday

11 Jun 2024

Plastic Free Thanet, Rise Up Clean Up and Oast in Margate are launching The Margate Cup on Friday 14 June.

Lightweight and made of fully recycled and recyclable plastic, The Margate Cup and our #ChooseToReuse discount scheme are part of our campaign to reduce the amount of single-use plastic on our streets and beaches.

In the UK, 2.5 billion single-use coffee cups are thrown away each year and most of them contain plastic. Many of these end up in our gutters, waterways, on our beaches and in the sea.

Available exclusively from Oast (for now), the cups are an affordable £2.50 one-off cost and will get you discounted coffees all over town. Participating coffee shops so far include The Grain Grocer, Big Shot, Cliff's and the Bus Cafe - with more to be announced. Plus, 25p from each sale goes to the brilliant Rise Up Clean Up.

Plastic Free Thanet founder Jessica Rose says:

"Local businesses told us that they wanted practical solutions to single-use plastic and The Margate Cup is exactly that. Affordable and desirable, we're hoping this pilot with Oast will see many more coffee shops across Thanet coming on board to offer the cups themselves and to offer discounts to anyone with a reusable cup. It's all about trying to get more of a reuse culture going in our towns to stop plastic finding its way onto our streets and beaches in the first place."

The first 20 people to buy The Margate Cup from Oast on our launch morning of Friday 14 June will receive their coffee for free.
